The research focus of Alhooshani’s group at the Department of Chemistry, KFUPM, is on the development and modification of advanced porous and nanomaterials such as metal-oxides nanoparticles, modified-carbon, mesoporous silica, zeolites, hybrids and metals supported materials. We are particularly focused and specialized on different applications related to environmental abatement and industrial catalysis. Ongoing research in our lab focuses on synthesis and characterization of new hierarchical materials with unique properties, adsorption of organic contaminants and pollutants, adsorptive desulfurization, adsorption and separation of gases, CO2 dry reforming of methane, extraction pesticides, extraction of toxic compounds in biological samples.

We utilize a suite of characterization methods/techniques to investigate and elucidate the physico-chemical properties of developed materials, and to complement the performance characteristics after application by means of Powder X-ray Diffraction (p-XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid state Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), Fourier Transform Infrared, Raman spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), adsorption-desorption isotherm, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM and TEM), Temperature programmed reduction and desorption, and Thermal analysis (TGA), among others. The techniques are used in complementary manner to enhance understanding of the relevant systems and their applications to current challenges.
