My central goal underlying community engagement activities is to improve the presentation of scientific information to the public, educators, and students thereby improving the general understanding of scientific principles amongst people from various educational backgrounds. Studies carried out by the ministry of education suggest that currently in Saudi Arabia a large fraction of the community show little interest in topics pertinent to science, leading to reluctance of many students to pursue scientific disciplines. The ministry of education has concluded that this disinterest results in weak performance in math and science, and further impacts public attitudes toward the science community. In an effort to positively impact the development of math and science I have sought to engage educators of children of all ages to minimize this gap with three projects.

Key Projects

1. Developing Expertise in Teaching Chemistry

The Saudi Arabian International Chemical Sciences Chapter (SAICSC) organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education the initiative to develop expertise for chemistry teachers. In coordination with the General Administration of Educational Supervision, It included many interactive workshops for education departments within different regions of Saudi Arabia.

The program was prepared and implemented by Dr. Khalid Alhooshani from February 21, 2018 to April 12, 2018. It implemented 9 workshops with approximately 700 chemistry teachers and supervisors. The program was aimed at developing the skills of chemistry teachers through enhancing and deepening their specialized knowledge. The program was built for teachers to practice effective teaching methods that bring chemistry concepts to students in a more practical way. 2. Science Office for Community

I am the founder of KFUPM Science Office for Community to make a positive and long term impact on the quality of science education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by supporting science school teachers, and enhancing scientific awareness in the community. This project was established in March 2015 and was supported by the Ministry Of Education. We frame our activities to be recognized as a leader for K-12 teacher’s professional development and community outreach.

3. Chemistry Teachers Summer Program (CTSP)

I believe that great teachers play a vital role to influence young minds. In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor for student achievement. Ongoing professional development for high school teachers is vital to keep them up-to-date with current techniques in teaching methodologies, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more. In many places in the world, all teachers are required to have a specific number of hours of professional development every school year. I have been leading the CTSP program under the Saudi Chemical Society graciously, with financial support from Saudi Aramco to target male and female Saudi high-school chemistry teachers to enhance the level of high-school student’s understanding of the important theories and basic chemical concepts through proper training for those chemistry teachers. CTSP is a holistic program that considers theoretical aspects behind effective teaching along with practical experience of the learnt concepts and incorporates the latest methodologies to engage students intellectually. The program consists of 150 hours of trainings in Arabic language.  It included wide range of chemistry subject. Each Week utilized to focus on specific areas of the chemistry curriculum. 4. Professional Development Workshops

I have been in the educational field for more than 20 years, and I greatly understand the importance of promoting new strategies in the classroom. To promote and improve student’s learning, I conducted many workshops tailored to university faculty as well as K-12 teachers. Through these workshops, students are exposed to a multitude of strategies that they can then adapt for their own learning styles in the classroom. For detail of previous workshops click here to view.
